Preparation Guide & La Dieta | AYAHUASCA TORONTO

Preparing Mind, Body & Spirit for Plant Medicine

Proper preparation is the foundation of a safe, profound, and transformative Ayahuasca experience. At AYAHUASCA TORONTO (ayahuasca-toronto.com), we follow traditional Shipibo protocols that begin long before you step onto our 58-acre sanctuary at Souls Path Retreats in Blackstock, Ontario.
Following La Dieta (the sacred preparation diet) purifies your physical body, clears your energetic field, and ensures your system is receptive to the healing intelligence of the master plants.

What to Pack for Your Retreat

  • Comfortable Clothing: Loose, breathable white or light-colored clothing for ceremony, plus warm layers and socks for cooler evening temperatures.
  • Nature Attire: Sturdy walking shoes or boots for exploring the 58 acres of trails at Souls Path Sanctuary.
  • Ceremony Essentials: A personal water bottle, journal with pen, and a small flashlight or headlamp (preferably with a red-light setting).
  • Personal Toiletries: Unscented, natural, eco-friendly soap, toothpaste, and personal items.

The Dietary Guidelines (La Dieta)

To avoid physical discomfort and dangerous biochemical interactions, adhere strictly to these dietary rules starting 10 to 14 days before your retreat:
  • Eliminate Tyramine & Fermented Foods: Avoid aged cheeses, cured meats, soy sauce, fermented foods, yeast extracts, and overripe fruits. Tyramine interacts negatively with the MAO-inhibiting properties of Ayahuasca.
  • Remove Recreations & Substances: Absolutely no alcohol, cannabis, recreational drugs, or nicotine.
  • Avoid Heavy & Processed Foods: Cut out pork, red meat, deep-fried foods, heavy oils, excess salt, refined sugars, and artificial sweeteners.
  • Limit Caffeine & Stimulants: Gradually taper off coffee, energy drinks, and excessive black/green tea to avoid withdrawal headaches during ceremony.
  • Embrace Clean Whole Foods: Focus on fresh vegetables, whole grains (rice, oats, quinoa), legumes, fresh non-citrus fruits, and light plant proteins cooked simply without heavy spices.

Medical & Pharmaceutical Contraindications

CRITICAL MEDICAL WARNING: Certain prescription medications interact dangerously with Ayahuasca and can lead to life-threatening conditions such as Serotonin Syndrome. You MUST disclose all health conditions and medications during intake.
  • Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, Tricyclics): Must be safely tapered off under the supervision of your prescribing physician 2 to 6 weeks prior to the retreat.
  • Blood Pressure & Cardiac Medications: Must be reviewed and cleared by our intake team.
  • CNS Depressants, Sleep Aids & Anti-Anxiety Drugs: Avoid sedatives, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines.
  • Decongestants & Asthma Inhalers: Avoid over-the-counter cold medicines containing dextromethorphan (DXM) or pseudoephedrine

Mental, Energetic & Spiritual Preparation

Preparing for ceremony involves more than just physical food; it requires detoxifying your mental and emotional environment:
  • Energy & Sexual Abstinence: Abstain from all sexual activity (including masturbation) for at least 7 days prior. In shamanic traditions, preserving vital sexual energy strengthens your protection during ceremony.
  • Digital & Media Fasting: Reduce exposure to violent movies, loud news, social media, and stressful work environments to help quiet your nervous system.
  • Cultivate Intention (Intentio): Spend time journaling, meditating, and spending time in nature. Clarify why you are seeking the medicine, while remaining open and holding no fixed expectations for how the experience will unfold
