A typical journey follows three essential stages:
[ Preparation (La Dieta) ] ➜ [ Ceremony & Experience ] ➜ [ Integration ]
Before drinking the brew, participants typically follow a traditional preparation diet (La Dieta) for days or weeks:
Dietary restrictions: Avoiding tyramine-rich foods (aged cheeses, fermented items), processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and pork to prevent dangerous interactions with the MAOIs in the brew.
Medication safety: Discontinuing specific medications—especially SSRI antidepressants, which can trigger life-threatening serotonin syndrome when combined with MAOIs.
Mental prep: Setting clear intentions while letting go of specific expectations.
Held at night and led by an experienced facilitator or traditional shaman (curandero), ceremonies follow a structured format:
Opening: The space is cleansed with sacred smoke (such as Mapacho tobacco or Palo Santo), and participants drink the brew.
The Onset: Effects begin within 20 to 60 minutes and last between 4 to 6 hours. Shamans guide the energetic state using sacred songs (icaros).
The Purge: Vomiting, sweating, or diarrhea commonly occurs. In traditional contexts, purging is viewed as a necessary physical and energetic release of trapped emotions, trauma, or toxins.
Integration is the process of translating the insights, visions, and revelations from the ceremony into everyday life. This stage often involves journaling, therapy, community sharing circles, and lifestyle adjustments to build long-term personal transformation.
Ayahuasca is unique because it relies on a specific two-plant synergy to become psychoactive and therapeutic when ingested orally.
| Plant Component | Scientific Name | Active Compound | Physiological Role |
| Ayahuasca Vine | Banisteriopsis caapi | Harmala Alkaloids (MAOIs: Harmine, Harmaline, Tetrahydroharmine) | Temporarily inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes in the stomach, allowing DMT to reach the bloodstream and brain |
| Chacruna Leaf | Psychotria viridis | N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) | Enters the central nervous system, binding to serotonin receptors to induce expanded vision, spiritual insight, and deep memory retrieval |
Botanical Fact: In traditional Amazonian ethnobotany, the Banisteriopsis caapi vine is considered the actual “master teacher” and force of the medicine, while the Chacruna leaf provides the “light” or visionary clarity needed to navigate the spiritual realm.
